Expert's View
“This is a lovely ‘vin doux naturel’ sweet wine from the far south appellation of Maury in the Roussillon region. It is a very surprising wine, a sweet wine that’s rich with concentrated fruit and some tannins to keep things really interesting. If you like wines that are a bit different (and you’re greedy, like me!) this is one to try. This wine is featured in the world's best Michelin Restaurants”
Origin
Mas Amiel is the largest and most important producer in Maury. Located in the heart of Cahar country, just below the ruined castle of Queribus, it was founded in 1816 when Raymond Amiel won the deeds from the Bishop of Perignas in a game of cards.
Taste
An inky black wine made from 100% grenache noir grapes. On the nose it is complex and sumptuous, offering aromas of sweet ripe black fruits, warming spices, tobacco, mocha and garden herbs. On the palate it is dense and concentrated with fruit and spice flavours dominating, and yet it’s perfectly balanced also, with soft tannins giving it structure.
Enjoy
Drinking well now, and for the next three years. Surprisingly, this is a very versatile wine that makes a delightful chilled aperitif, an excellent partner to pâtés, foie gras dishes and strong soft cheeses, or a luxurious accompaniment to rich warm chocolate desserts.
